FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Even in times of sorrow or hopelessness, political conditions are dynamic. As we move forward, there are reasons to believe a new social movement can rise to confront Trumpism, drawing on past successes and effective strategies against autocrats.
We are mobilizing to take advantage of a large trigger event to build a vehicle to accelerate the onboarding, political education, organizing and mobilizing work capacity by helping to build relationships and numbers of people in movements.
Mass protest is one of the most effective ways to demonstrate to our communities that we are not obeying in advance or bowing to fascism, and invites them to do the same.

The mobilization is being organized by a coalition of organizations across the movement landscape through a broad committee structure. Amongst the coalition members are Abortion Action Now, Time to Act, SisterSong, Women’s March, Popular Democracy In Action, Harriet’s Wildest Dreams, The Feminist Front, NOW, Planned Parenthood, National Women’s Law Center Action Fund, Sierra Club, and the Frontline. Women’s March is anchoring the logistics of the mobilization. The role of coordinated infrastructure and these convos have been moving since July 2024. For a complete list of sponsors and partner, see our homepage.

Our ability to absorb people into political homes and keep them in relationship to each other as they do work is the best indicator of a mobilization’s success. Seeing a smaller turnout than the largest single day protest in this country’s history would not signify a downturn or weakness of the movement.
Mobilizations of this kind are much better indicators of people who are moving into movement, rather than representing the totality of movement, or even a temperature check of movement. More people equate to a fortified movement.

We are working with organizations who have the experience of and capacity to absorb large bases to develop mechanisms to connect individuals with potential political homes. One of the mobilization’s committees will specifically focus on organizing and absorption.
In addition, the mobilization will include a resource area where participants will have the opportunity to be plugged in in real time. Women’s March is also offering online tools to organizations who may not have capacity within their infrastructure to manage and communicate with participants.

Check the weather before heading out. In cold weather:
Layering is key:
Start with a moisture-wicking base layer, add a thicker insulating layer, and finish with a waterproof, windproof outer jacket.
Head and extremities protection:
Wear a warm beanie that covers your ears, gloves or mittens, and waterproof boots with good traction that are comfortable.
Comfortable clothing:
Choose clothes that allow for movement and won't restrict you during a protest.

Any weapons, or anything that can be construed as a weapon, including pocket knives, multi-tools, mace, scissors, etc.
Any illegal drugs (while marijuana is legal in D.C., the march will be on federal property and national park land, where marijuana is still illegal)
Coat-hanger imagery: We do not want to accidentally reinforce the right-wing talking points that self-managed abortions are dangerous, scary and harmful.
Handmaid’s Tale themed: The use of Handmaid's Tale imagery to characterize the controlling of women’s reproduction has proliferated, primarily by white women across the country, since the show has gained popularity. This message continues to create more fragmentation, often around race and class, because it erases the fact that Black women, undocumented women, incarcerated women, poor women and disabled women have always had their reproduction freedom controlled in this country. This is not a dystopian past or future.
